Take an Example from Top Athletes!

If you are reading this right now, you are probably the kind of person that doesn’t go with the flow. You are looking for ways to improve and grow constantly, and you don’t shy away from opportunities to do so, even if they don’t provide instant gratification. Congratulations! This is the first step to become successful in your career and reach your goals!

In this article, we are going to take a look at top-ranking athletes’ success strategies from the point of view of Markus Czerner, a business trainer and motivator.

Think Big

Specific goals are the foundation of success. Most people don’t set themselves any goals or tend to have the wrong approach. Define specific goals for yourself that you wish to achieve a year from now and write them down. Generally speaking, you can achieve anything you can imagine. If you cannot imagine something, you probably cannot achieve it, either. Thus, top athletes usually assume the maximum when it comes to their goals. Would you like to get into a Senior position or into Management right after getting your degree? Can you imagine it? Meaning, can you actually see yourself in that position? What would your first acts be? What kind of leader would you be? If you cannot imagine something, you are probably not capable of fulfilling that specific role yet.

Action Goals > Outcome Goals

Outcome-based goals are important, but action-based goals are even more important. When going for the FIFA World Cup in 2014, the German national team aimed at becoming World Champions, which was their outcome goal. However, the goals they truly focused on were the action goals, which were getting out of defensive settings as fast as possible, rapid bursts forward, or putting the other team under pressure as soon as possible, just to name a few. Thus, you have to decide on very specific action goals that will lead to your outcome goal.
Outcome goals create pressure, while action goals relieve it, removing possible mental blockades.

Find the Why

Goals represent the foundation of success, but they all require a Why. Why do you want to achieve a certain goal? Every top athlete has a Why that is stronger than any defeat. They train with unyielding will and discipline. But those are merely consequences of the Why, their initial motivation, the one thing that gets them out of bed every morning. Once you are fully aware of your motivation, temporary defeats and setbacks won’t stop you from achieving your goals.

Challenge as a Motivator

Competitive situations make many people feel uncomfortable, but a change of one’s perspective can turn heavy competition into additional fuel. When top athletes see their competition succeed, it drives them to work harder, as they obviously see it can be done. If you have a colleague who is interested in the same position, don’t see them as a threat, but as additional motivation. Keep improving yourself until you leave your competition behind. Try not to think negatively, aka “I have no chance against this employee with 10 years of experience”. People have different priorities, and your colleagues don’t have more than 24 hours a day to invest into things that matter, either. Should you fail against your competition, use this opportunity for reflection. Place your bet on constant self-improvement, as it is the key to success.

Let us sum up what we can take away from top athletes:

1. Set yourself goals.
2. Write down your goals.
3. Define few outcome goals, backed by many action goals.
4. Find the Why.
5. Believe in yourself, even if others do not.
6. Change your focus if needed.
7. Use failures for self-improvement.
8. Never blame others for your failures.
9. Always give it your best shot.
10. Do not look for excuses. There will always be reasons not to do something. But there will also be a reason to do it: your goal.

Coach Introduction: Stefan Postler

Stefan completed the coaching program at EBS in 2008/2009 and has been connected with us ever since. As a member of the management team and Executive Board for TERRITORY, Europe's largest agency for brand content, Stefan orchestrates a number of creative minds. His task involves using top-level creative services to develop business solutions for TERRITORY's clients from the fields of marketing and communication.

Of the 30 top DAX-listed companies, 28 are among TERRITORY's clients. Around 1,000 employees - operating in German offices in Hamburg, Gütersloh, Cologne and Munich - ensure interconnected communication across all channels, for every target group, all the time.

Stefan Postler's career start might seem unusual in light of his current position.
At the age of 16, he chose to take the vocational route, completing an apprenticeship as a toolmaker. He then obtained his university-entrance diploma with the aim of studying mechanical engineering. But this never came about, as a daily newspaper offered him a traineeship after completing his diploma, eventually hiring him onto the editorial team for the paper's political section.

After five years, he made the move to internal communications at Bertelsmann - first as site editor, then as editor in chief, and finally as managing editor. After five years, he left the media corporation and began as managing editor and Deutsche Post key account manager at a small agency that, by 2016, grew to 500 employees and became the backbone of TERRITORY. Transformation has accompanied him throughout his career for many years now - first within the agency itself, and still today with many clients of his agency.

Stefan is married and has five adopted children from many parts of the world, who help him quickly forget the stress of the office when he's at home. As a wine lover, he enjoys reading wine lists - which fits perfectly with his passion for cooking and baking.

Stefan Postler is offering coaching sessions only in German. Contact us to book an appointment with him!
